Leader/06 Type of record (Leader)

Character position definition and scope:

The Type of record character position contains a one-character alphabetic code that indicates the characteristics of and defines the components of the record, usually describing in general the type of material, for example, printed music, musical sound recording, kit, etc. The code is also used to determine the appropriateness and validity of certain data elements in the record.

Enter more specific information about the material in other fields in the record. For example, a specific type of projected medium, like a slide , would be described by a code in the Fixed-length Data Elements field 008/33 VM: Type of visual material .

Microforms , whether original or reproductions, are not identified by a distinctive Type of record code. The type of material characteristics described by the codes take precedence over the microform characteristics of the item.

Computer files are identified by a distinctive Type of record code only if they belong to certain categories of electronic resources as specified below; in all other cases, the type of material characteristics described by the codes take precedence over the computer file characteristics of the item.

Determination of the code for a multi-item bibliographic entity (types of material are those specified by values a - t in the table below):

Items are multiple forms of material:

o	entity is issued as a single unit; no type of material predominates
p	entity is a made-up collection; no type of material predominates
other codes	entity is a made-up collection; one type of material predominates

Items are all one form of material:

any except o or p

all cases

Record requirements (National-level and Minimal-level) for Leader/06 for all types of material : Mandatory.

Validity by material type : Leader/06 is valid for all types. Each code in Leader/06 is valid for the material type listed in the Field 008/18-34 definition column in the table below:

Content designator history:

Code b (Archival and manuscripts control) was made obsolete in 1995 when Leader/08 was defined for Type of control.

Code h (Microform publications) is obsolete. Defined 1968-1972; use 007 Microform .

Code n (Special instructional material) is obsolete. Defined 1975-1983; use code k (Two-dimensional nonprojectable graphic) and code r (Three-dimensional artifacts and naturally occurring objects).
