Validity by Material Type:

The validity of certain codes defined for the record Leader and the definition of data elements in fields 006 (Fixed-Length Data Elements - Additional Material Characteristics) , 007 (Physical Description Fixed Field) and 008 (Fixed-Length Data Elements) is dependent upon the type of material to which a bibliographic item belongs.

The seven material types (sometimes referred to as Formats) are:

BK Books

CF Computer files

MP Maps

MU Music

SE Serials

VM Visual materials

MX Mixed materials
