Character position definition and scope:
A one-character alphabetic code indicates how the sound was originally captured and stored. Re-releases of recordings should be coded for the original capture and storage technique, even though such re-releases may have been enhanced using another technique.

Prior to the definition of this character position in 1987, capture and storage information was contained in 007/04 (Kind of sound). When 007/13 was defined, 007/04 was redefined as Configuration of playback channels and the 04 codes that were not descriptive of that characteristic were made obsolete.
