022 International Standard Serial Number (R) (Variable Data Field)
Field 022 contains the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN ), a unique identification number assigned to a serial title, and/or any incorrect or canceled ISSN. The ISSN is assigned to a serial publication by a national center under the auspices of the ISSN Network.
The initialism ISSN and the phrases ISSN (incorrect) and ISSN (canceled) are not carried in the MARC record. The hyphen separating the two groups of digits is carried in the MARC record. (The ISSN is an agency-assigned data element .)
The National level record requirement for this field is Mandatory if applicable.
Field 022 is repeatable .

Subfield $z was redefined to include only ISSN assignment cancellations when subfield $y was defined in 1978. Prior to that time, subfield $z contained both incorrect and canceled ISSNs.
