034 Subfield $a - Category of scale:

point_b1.gif Subfield $a contains a one-character alphabetic code indicating the type of scale of the item. It is used even when a specific scale is not recorded (first indicator position contains value 0 ). The codes used in subfield $a are:

dotred.gif a - Linear scale

Code a indicates a linear scale.

Example:

034 1#$aa$b100000

dotred.gif b - Angular scale

Code b indicates an angular scale and is used for celestial charts.

dotred.gif z - Other type of scale

Code z indicates any other type of scale, for example, a time scale, quantitative statistical scale, etc.

point_b1.gif If the scale statement is the only subfield given in field 255 and if the scale statement does not contain a representative fraction, field 034 will contain only subfield $a.
