Guidelines for applying content designators:
The content designators identify the subelements occurring in uniform or conventional title, title page title, or series title headings that are not entered under a name in a name/title heading and that are constructed according to the generally accepted cataloging and thesaurus-building rules [e.g., Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR 2 ), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)].
A uniform title heading is used to bring together bibliographic entries
for a work when various issues have appeared under different titles and
to provide identification for a work when the title by which it is known
differs from the title proper of a particular issue or when different publications
have identical titles.
A uniform title entered under a name is contained in field
240 or in subfield $t (Title of a work) in the field appropriate
for the author's name (X00 Personal Names , X10
Corporate Names , X11 Meeting Names ).
Uniform titles used in phrase subject headings (e.g., Bible
and atheism) are contained
in field 650 (Subject Added Entry - Topical Term)
.
The indicators, subfield codes, and input conventions for the uniform title fields 130, 630, 730, and 830 follow similar patterns. Guidelines for applying the first indicator and subfield codes are below. Subfields are grouped by type of entry. See the specific field for the second indicator information.
For indicator and subfield code definitions and examples, National-level (NLR) and Minimal-level (MLR) record requirements , and designator repeatability , see table below. An asterisk ( * ) in the column indicates that the requirement varies. See table in the specific field.:
Ambiguous headings (what is considered a "uniform
title")
Initial articles (includes information on diacritics
or special characters)
First indicator - Nonfiling characters [130,
630, 730]
Value # - Nonfiling
characters not specified
[obsolete]
The number of character positions associated with a definite or indefinite article at the beginning of a uniform title field that are disregarded in sorting and filing processes was not specified prior to the definition of the first indicator position in 1979.
The interpretation of a # (blank ) to indicate that the number of nonfiling characters is not specified was made obsolete in 1980. Pre-1979 records may contain a # (blank) meaning undefined in this position.
Second indicator - Main
entry/subject relationship [130] (BK
MU SE) [obsolete]:
The use of the second indicator in field 130 to
indicate the main entry/subject relationship was made obsolete in 1990.
The values were: 0 (Main entry/subject relationship irrelevant)
and 1 (Main entry is subject).
Second indicator - Type of added entry [730]
Values 0 - Alternative entry (BK AM CF MP MU SE) [obsolete]
1 - Secondary entry (BK AM CF MP MU SE) [obsolete]
1 - Printed on card (VM) [obsolete]
3 - Not printed on card (VM) [obsolete]
In 1993, second indicator values 0 (Alternative entry) and 1 (Secondary entry) were made obsolete in the books, archival and manuscripts control, computer files, maps, music, and serials specifications. Values 1 (Printed on card) and 3 (Not printed on card) were made obsolete in the visual materials specifications.
Subfield $d - Date
of treaty signing
[defined]: The
date of signing of a treaty was not separately subfield coded prior to
the definition of subfield $d in 1980.
Subfields $n - Number
of part/section of a work
[defined]
$p - Name of part/section of a work [redefined]
In 1979, subfield $n was defined for numbered parts/sections and subfield $p (Part) was redefined to include only named parts/sections. Prior to that change, both the number and the name of a part were contained in one $p subfield.
