410 Series Statement/Added Entry - Corporate Name (R) (Variable Data Field) (American Local Data Element)

Field definition and scope:

Field 410 is used in the United States to support retrospective conversion of Pre-AACR 2 cataloging records. It was made obsolete in CAN/MARC in 1988.

This field contains an author/title series statement in which the author portion is a corporate name or a pronoun representing it that refers back to a 110 field . Field 410 is both a series statement and a series added entry. When a 410 field is present, a corresponding 810 field is not used, since it would duplicate the 410 field. Field 410 is not used for AACR 2 formulated series statements as such statements are in title form.

NOTE: With the introduction of AACR 2, fields 400, 410, and 411 are no longer used for any type of material; thus, only the 440 and 490 fields are currently used by agencies following these rules. These fields may occur in pre-AACR 2 bibliographic records.

Field 410 is repeatable .

Guidelines for applying content designators:

The defined content designators identify the subelements occurring in corporate name fields constructed according to the generally accepted cataloging and thesaurus-building rules [e.g., Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR 2 ), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)].

A corporate name, a form subheading, a title of a work, and/or a city section name entered under the name of a jurisdiction are X10 corporate names.

A name of a jurisdiction that represents an ecclesiastical entity is an X10 corporate name.

For subject purposes, other names of jurisdictions used alone or followed by subject subdivisions are geographic names and are contained in field 651 (Subject Added Entry - Geographic Name) .

For non-subject purposes, other names used alone are contained in 110, 410, and 710 fields.

A named meeting that is entered under a corporate name is contained in the X10 fields.

A meeting entered directly under its own name is contained in the X11 fields .

Corporate names used in phrase subject headings (e.g., Catholic Church in art) are contained in field 650 (Subject Added Entry - Topical Term) .

MARC 21 conversion to current fields:

If indicator 2 is 0:

4XX indicator 1 and all subfields except subfield $x convert to 8XX with same indicator 1 value and same subfields,

and 4XX $t, $v, $x are also copied to 490 $a, $v, $x, respectively; 490 indicator 1 is set to 1.

If indicator 2 is 1:

4XX indicator 1 and all subfields except subfields $a and $x convert to 8XX with same indicator 1 value and same subfields,

and all 1XX subfields are copied into the same 8XX, preceeding the subfields from the 4XX field,

and 4XX $t, $v, $x are also copied to 490 $a, $v, $x, respectively; 490 indicator 1 is set to 1.

Content designator history:

Fields 400, 410, and 411 are not used for AACR 2 formulated series statements. They may occur in pre-AACR 2 bibliographic records.

Subfields $c - Location of meeting [defined]

$d - Date of meeting or treaty signing [defined]

The location and date of a meeting and the date of signing of a treaty entered under a corporate body or jurisdiction were not separately subfield coded prior to the definition of subfields $c and $d in 1980.

Subfields $n - Number of part/section/meeting [defined]

$p - Name of part/section of a work [redefined]

In 1979, subfield $n was defined for numbered parts/sections and subfield $p (Part) was redefined to include only named parts/sections. Prior to that change, both the number and the name of a part were contained in one $p subfield.

In 1980, the definition of subfield $n was expanded to include meeting numbers. Prior to this change, the number of a meeting entered under a corporate body was not separately subfield coded.

410 Series Statement/Added Entry - Corporate Name

In 1999, field 410 became local to the United States since it was obsolete in the CAN/MARC format. In MARC 21, it is described in Appendix H: Local Data Elements .
