440 Series Statement/Added Entry - Title (R) (Variable Data Field)
Field 440 contains a series title statement when the series statement and the controlled added entry form of the series title are the same. Field 440 is both a series statement and a series added entry (title is traced). When a 440 field is present, a corresponding 830 field is not used since it would duplicate the 440 field.
Since series statements do not include medium designators (subfield $h), when a series added entry requires a medium designator, field 490 is used for the series statement with a corresponding 8XX field for the series added entry.
The National level record requirement for this field is Mandatory if applicable.
Field 440 is repeatable .

Subfields $n - Number of part/section of a work [defined]
$p - Name of part/section of a work [defined]

For projected media (motion pictures, filmstrips, videorecordings, slides, and transparencies), this field can occur in records for items cataloged under rules in effect before the 1975 revision of Chapter 12 of AACR 1. Prior to this revision, a media qualifier was not required in the series added entry when the name of the medium was an integral part of the series title, thus allowing the series added entry to be derived from the series statement. Under the revised rules of AACR 1, all series added entries for projected media and special instructional materials must contain a media qualifier; therefore, field 440 does not occur in records for items cataloged under the revised version of the AACR 1 rules.
Under AACR 2
, field 440 can occur in records if an institution chooses not to use media qualifiers in series added entries.
