field2.gif table2.gif ic2.gif history2.gif

Field definition and scope:

Field 490 contains a series statement for which no series added entry is to be made, or for which the series added entry is in a controlled form different from that which appears in the series statement. Field 490 does not serve as a series added entry. When field 490 is used and a series added entry is desired, both the series statement (field 490) and a corresponding series added entry (800-830 fields ) are separately recorded in the bibliographic record.

This field is always used when a series statement contains the volume(s) or date(s) during which the publication was issued as an integral part of the title.

For serials , when an item has been issued as part of a collected series during a period of time and is classified under the Library of Congress call number of that series (field 050 ) for that period, the LC call number of the series is enclosed in parentheses within the series statement.

The National level record requirement for this field is Mandatory if applicable.

Field 490 is repeatable .
