040 Subfield $e - Description conventions:
Subfield $e contains information specifying the description rules used in creating the record except in the following cases:
when the rules are based on or are consistent with AACR 1 or AACR
2 ;
when the access points specified in the rules are consistent with AACR
1 or AACR 2; or,
when the 1908, 1941, or 1949 ALA rules have been used.
Subfield $e may also be used to record the use of AACR 2-based manuals approved by LC for special forms of material, but the subfield is optional in such instances. Subfield $e may contain either the name of the rules or a MARC code designating the rules. The source of the code for description conventions is MARC Code List for Relators, Sources, Description Conventions that is maintained by the Library of Congress.
