Subfield $a contains either the classification number portion of the call number or an accession number. The source of the classification number is National Library of Medicine Classification that is maintained by the National Library of Medicine.

Current practice is to record alternative call numbers in separate occurrences of field 060.

In older records, subfield $a was repeated when alternate call numbers were recorded. In this case, the alternate class number was recorded following the last subfield of the call number. If the alternate class number also included an item number, the item number was included in the same subfield $a as the alternate class number; it was not separately subfielded.
