561 ##$aThe journal was discovered in a cellar in Nantes in 1837 and was removed to the Abbey of St. Pierre, where it remained until 1887, when it was given to Gehan Tourel, apparently in gratitude for his provision of legal services to the abbey. The journal was brought to the United States by Tourel in 1902, and his heirs sold it to William Maxwell in 1952. Maxwell donated the journal in 1964 to the Humanities Research Library.
