Preface

This sixth edition of the LC Classification Outline is expanded and revised to provide an outline of the topics in the classification schedules as of September 1990. The recently developed schedule for Central Europe, DAW, is included, as is the 1989 revision of southern Africa in DT.

The purpose of the outline is to provide a key to the Library of Congress classification system somewhere between the mere captions of the subclasses, of which there are approximately 300, and the detail of the schedules themselves, of which there are 48 published volumes comprising an estimated 13,000 pages. This outline should contribute to a better understanding of the distribution not only of the disciplines but of their major topics and subtopics.
