1D. Parallel titles (Title and Statement of Responsibility)
A parallel title is defined by traditional library usage as the title proper in another language and/or script. For international co-productions, see 1D1 . Use a parallel title if it applies directly to the material the archive holds, that is, if the item being cataloged is in the language of the parallel title. For example, when describing an English language titled American release copy of a French film, include the English language title as a parallel title. The title proper is, of course, the original release title in the country of production . When an archive holds a non-English language title whose intended audience’s language is not English, the English-language title, if one is found in research or accompanying documentation, etc., should be given in a note. It should not be given as a parallel title.
The source of translated titles must always be examined carefully. Foreign language titles released in the U.S. are not always translated into English. English language title translations may appear in secondary sources, but are not in fact authorized or readily recognized title translations. Good judgment must be exercised in deciding which titles are major access points and which are not. Added entries will of course always be given for parallel titles. If a general material designation is used, place it after the title proper (the original release title).
