1G. Statements of responsibility (Title and Statement of Responsibility)
Introduction:
A statement of responsibility is a statement, transcribed from the material being described, accompanying material, or from secondary sources, which relates those corporate bodies and persons credited with participation in the original production of a moving image work and who are considered to be of major importance to the work. Credits and their functions are synonymous with the concept of statement of responsibility.
Standard cataloging practice for archival moving image material is to give the production company as the first statement of responsibility. With few exceptions, such as amateur-produced material and the instances in which an individual does in fact perform all production activities, the production company is responsible, in a broad sense, for the overall creation of the work. The production company often serves as the coordinating body responsible for the participation of all persons and other companies in the production of a moving image work.
For choice of the form of personal and corporate names, see the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition, Chapters 22 and 24. When there is a conflict between how a name appears on the item and how it appears in secondary sources, use the form that appears on the item in the statement of responsibility. Use what is determined to be the correct form of name as the access point and give a cross reference from the form that appears on the item (and in the statement of responsibility) to the correct form.
