3C. Specific rules (Country of Production)
3C1. Record the name of the country only. Do not name cities, counties, states, etc.
3C2. Standard abbreviations may be used for the name of the country of production. Two major lists of standard abbreviations that may be used are: 1) the Library of Congress MARC Country of Publication Codes, and 2) the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions’ Names of States: an Authority List of Language Forms for Catalogue Entries.
3C3. When the country of production is unknown, enter s.l., (sine loco - without place) in the country of production area and, if necessary, give further explanation in a note. See 7B10 .
Note: The instances in which no country can be identified will probably be rare. In most cases, a tentative identification can be given (see 3C5 below.).
3C4. For footage that was never released commercially, e.g., home movies , outtakes , unedited footate, etc., give the country that is the home of the subject or that seems appropriate in the particular situation.
3C5. If the identification of the country is probable, give the name of the country enclosed in brackets. If the identification is questionable, give the name of the country followed by a question mark and enclose both in square brackets. Give explanation or describe research problems in a note, if necessary. See 7B10 .
3C6. Record the country of production only. Do not record in this area any other countries in which the moving image work may have been released , reissued , or rereleased .
3C7. Record the names of countries in English.
3C8. For international co-productions, record the names of the countries of co-production in the order in which the work was released in those countries. Separate the country names by a space, semicolon, space ( ; ). The order of the company names in the statement of responsibility should follow the order of release. The language of the first title should, in most cases of international co-productions, be the same language as that of the country of original release.
In the instances when a co-production is simultaneously released, or release information is unavailable, see 3C9.
3C9. If it is determined that the work was released simultaneously in several countries, or if the release order cannot be determined, record the co-production countries in the following order (which is based on availability of documentation in the U.S.) :
1. U.S. (if an American company is involved in the production).
2. U.K. (if a British company is involved in the production).
3. Other English-speaking country that is involved in the production.
4. France (if a French company is involved in the production).
5. West Germany (if a West German company is involved in the production).
6. Other Romance language-speaking country, if these countries are involved in the production.archive must establish order of recording if there is more than one Romance language country.
7. Other German language-speaking country, if these countries are involved in the production.Archive must establish order of recording if there is more than one German language country.
8. Other countries which use the Roman alphabet, if these countries are involved in the production. Archive must establish order of recording.
Alternatively, if the work was released simultaneously in several countries, or if the release order cannot be determined, record the countries in the order that their corresponding companies appear on the item and/or accompanying documentation.
Optionally, individual archives will establish the order for recording co-production countries.
3C10. Do not record in this area any countries which appear on the item, either in the credits or in the content of the work, but are not associated with the country (or countries) of original production. Place this information in a note.
