Introduction (Archival Moving Image Materials)
The purpose of this online help is to provide instructions for describing (cataloging) materials held by film and television archives, with this work done within the framework of the International Standard Bibliographic Description as reflected in chapter 7 of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition (AACR2). Subject access to the material is not addressed, nor are most aspects of name/title access; the emphasis of this online help instead is on the description of the material that makes up part of the catalog record for it. The archival materials covered include motion pictures and other theatrical releases, shorts , news footage (including television newscasts and theatrical newsreels ), trailers , outtakes , screen tests, training films, educational material, commercials, spot announcements, home movies , amateur footage, television broadcasts, and unedited footage.
Hereafter these materials are referred to collectively as "moving image material" and "moving image" designates them in various other phrases. Archives that hold moving image material that is exclusively of a single format or type, e.g., commercials, unedited footage, etc., will find only general guidelines for describing collections of this nature. More detailed instructions tailored to the need of users of these collections must be, and to some extent have been, developed.
