4XX Series Statement Fields (Variable Data Field)
Definition and scope:
The 4XX fields contain an author/title or a title used as a series statement in bibliographic records. The content of fields 400, 410, 411, and 440 are also used as a series added entry. The series statement in field 490 is not used as a series added entry tracing because it is either an untraced series or is one that is to be traced differently from the form contained in field 490. A series added entry tracing for a 490 series statement field that is traced differently is contained in one of the 800-830 Series Added Entry Fields . The 800-830 series added entry fields are thus used only in conjunction with field 490.
Since series statements do not include medium designators (subfield $h), when a series added entry requires a medium designator, field 490 is used for the series statement with a corresponding 800-830 field for the series added entry.
The parentheses that customarily enclose a series statement and the tracing Series., preceded by a roman numeral, in some displays for fields 400-440 are not carried in the MARC record. They may be generated based on the field tag.
NOTE: With the introduction of AACR 2 , fields 400-411 are no longer used for any type of material; thus, only the 440 and 490 fields are currently used by agencies following these rules. These fields may occur in pre-AACR 2 bibliographic records.
The National Level Record requirement for the 440 and 490 fields is A (Mandatory if applicable) for records in all types of material except Archival and manuscripts control.
