Field definition and scope:

Field 505 contains a formatted contents note. Contents information may be encoded at one of two levels; basic or enhanced. For some materials, data normally belonging in other notes or in other areas of description may be included (e.g., the number of pages, pieces, frames in each part).

For mixed materials and materials under archival control, this field may contain the table of contents of a finding aid.

Unformatted contents notes are recorded in field 500 (General Note) .

The note is usually displayed and/or printed with an introductory term or phrase that is generated as a display constant based on the first indicator value .
