001 Control Number (NR) (Variable Control Fields)
Field Definition and Scope:
This field contains the control number assigned by the organization creating, using, or distributing the record. The particular organization assigning the control number is identified by the USMARC code contains in 003 (Control Number Identifier ).
For interchange purposes, documentation of the structure of the control number and input conventions must be provided to exchange partners by the organization initiating the interchange. An organization using a record of another organization may move the original control number from field 001 and the organization's USMARC code from field 003 to field 035 (System Control Number) and place its own control number in field 001 and its own USMARC code in field 003.
The structure of the Library of Congress control number is described in field 010 (Library of Congress Control Number) . An organization using an LC USMARC record may replace the LC control number in field 001 with its own control number and the USMARC code (DLC) in field 003 with its own USMARC code.

Field 001 may be system generated.
