Classification schedules:

The printed volumes or machine-readable database that contain classification numbers and captions, arranged by subject in a logical, hierarchical manner. Also called schemes.

The classification schedules divide the entire field of knowledge into main classes, each covering a particular subject area (e.g., the social sciences in the Class H schedule; the fine arts in the Class N schedule, etc.). Within each subclass, further subdivisions are made to specify form, place, time and subject (or topical) aspects. A hierarchical display is formed by the subject progressing from the general to the specific.
