Societies G 240:

A society is a group of persons joined together for a common interest. A club, a fraternity, a lodge, or an association may be called a society. G 240 provides for classing societies in class A. Previously, the provisions of this instruction sheet (G 240) also applied to societies classed in classes B-Z. Two alternate tables, the Nine Number Table and the Three Number Table, were established and utilized in all classes. Although this practice has been discontinued, societies that have already been established using either the Nine Number Table or the Three Number Table are still shelflisted using the appropriate table. Societies classed in classes B-Z that do not already use either the Nine Number Table or the Three Number Table, follow the provisions for corporate bodies described in G 220, Subject Cataloging Manual: Shelflisting.
