Description/Instructions:
Field 362 contains beginning and/or ending numeric, alphabetic, and/or chronological designations of an item. Chronological designations used in this field are dates that identify individual issues of the serials. Publication dates are input in field 260 . Incomplete dates are not used in this field; uncertain dates/numbers may be given in an unformatted style followed by a question mark.
Field 362 is repeatable only when one of the fields is coded with first indicator value "0" and the other with value "1". When both beginning and ending designations are formatted, or both are unformatted, give them in a single 362 field.
Editing instructions:
1. Input a period at the end of the field when information is complete. Example:
2. When beginning and ending designations are given in separate 362 fields (indicator values "0" and "1"), input the beginning designation first. Example:
3. Combine beginning and ending designations into one note when both are unformatted (indicator value "1"). Example:
Additional instructions:
1. A "Description based on" note (field 500 ) must be present in any AACR2 record (except for regular-print reprints) in which there is no 362 field with first indicator "0" giving the designation of the first issue. Example:
2. When there is more than one designation omitted from the title and statement of responsibility area and both cannot be represented in field 362 or 500 , the first is given as the designation and the other is covered by a note, field 515 (Cf. LCRI 12.3). Example:
3. When cataloging Chinese, Japanese, or Korean serials, do not input a comma between the volume number and the issue number. Do not remove commas from records that already contain them. Example:
