a Linking entry complexity note (NR)
6 Linkage (NR)
Description/Instructions:
Field 580 is used to express complex relationships that cannot be accurately generated by using the display constants associated with the linking entry fields (765-787 ). It is also used for regular- print reprints to provide details of the original. Notes for relationships involving the 776 field (Additional physical form entry) are recorded in field 530.
With the exception of special cases, one or more linking entry fields (765-787 ) is also input, in addition to field 580. When field 580 is used in conjunction with a linking field, set the first indicator in the linking field to value "1" so that it will not print an additional note.
Field 580 used in the following situations:
1. When optional date information is provided with a "continued by" or "absorbed by" note. Example:
2. When more than one entry is mentioned in a specific linking entry relationship note, such as "Split into: . . . and:. . .", "Merged with:. . .to form:. . ." Example:
3. When the relationship cannot be expressed by a display constant in the linking entry field. Example:
4. For notes pertaining to a regular-print to provide details of the original publication. The note may be in a formatted or unformatted style. Example:
5. When the serial bears a relationship to a monograph or other non-serial format publication, this relationship can be expressed in a 580 note when no linking field is given. Linking fields can be given in records for monographs or other types of material, but this is a matter of institutional policy. At present, CONSER institutions have chosen not to link to monographs. Example:
6. When the serial bears a relationship to one or more publications which cannot be named, explain the relationship in a 580 note and do not provide any 7XX linking entry field . Example:
7. When a serial is issued in more than one frequency and two or more records are required, related on frequency edition to another using a 580 note. Example:
8. When the physical format in which the serial is issued changes. Example:
