490 Series Statement (R) (Variable Data Fields)


First indicator - -Specifies whether series is traced:

The first indicator specifies whether the series is untraced or traced in the form given in an 800-830 field .

Value "0" is used when no tracing is desired. Example:

When value "1" is used, an 800-830 field must also be input to provide the appropriate added entry. Value "1" is used in the following situations when the series is to be traced differently:

1. The series is to be traced with a uniform title in field 830 (i.e., a parenthetical qualifier is added to the title). Example:

2. The series is to be traced under a personal, conference or corporate name in field 800-811 . Example:

3. The series appears on the piece in a form different from the established series tracing without constituting a change in title. Example:

4. Information is added to the series statement which is not to be included in the series tracing (excluding the ISSN). This includes:

a. Dates or volume number preceding the series title.

b. Parallel titles.

c. Other title information.

d. Statement of responsibility.

e. Call numbers added by the Library of Congress. Example:

5. The series statement consists of a main series and a subseries and either or both are to be traced separately. Example:

0 Series not traced

1 Series traced differently
