Field 240 contains uniform titles that are added to serials entered under a name heading (fields 100 , 110 , or 111 ). The name heading and uniform title together comprise the main entry for the serial. Uniform titles that are added to serials entered under title are given in field 130 .

Uniform titles, whether given in field 240 or 130, are of two types:

1. those that bring together all entries for the same work when different manifestations (e.g. translations, editions) have appeared under different titles, or that bring together certain types of legal publications, e.g., treaties, codes, etc. Example:

2. those that differentiate two works entered under the same name and same title proper (LCRI 25.5B)
