Description/Instructions:
Field 510 specifies where a serial has been indexed and/or abstracted and, if known, the dates of coverage or location within the source. Each abstracting/indexing service is tagged as a separate field . For rare serials, field 510 contains a bibliographic reference note.
This field is used when the indexing is external to the publication in hand. Field 555 is used when the index is an integral part of the publication and covers more than one volume or issue.
The indexing and abstracting services referenced are primarily those issued as serials. Certain monographic titles, particularly those that are standard reference tools in a subject area or that cover periods of time not included in continuing publications, may also be given in this field.
From January 1984 through May 1985, the CONSER Abstracting and Indexing (A&I) Coverage Project added 130,000 citation notes to the database. The symbol "AIP" in field 040 identifies records updated by the Project. A&I supplied lists of titles covered and dates of coverage. Maintenance of A&I information is handled by NSDP and NLC. Appendix G supplies a list of the participating abstracting and indexing services. For further information, see A6.2.
Editing instructions:
1. No changes should be made to existing field 510 information.
2. 510 fields should be grouped alphabetically within indicator values . The order of the indicators is: 1, 2, 0. This arrangement identifies comprehensive A&I products, followed by products with more selective coverage, and finally those with unidentified coverage. Example:
Display constant:
Display constants may be generated on output through a user's print program by first indicator values:
0 Indexed by:
1 Indexed in its entirety by:
2 Indexed selectively by:
3 References:
4 References:
Additional instructions:
1. When the title of the indexing or abstracting service changes, add a new 510 field to the record.
2. When coverage of the serial changes, thus requiring a different value in the first indicator, add a new 510 field with appropriate dates to the record.
