Subfield $q contains a description of any unusual characteristic of the physical condition of the piece when the holdings information does not contain and 863-865 (Enumeration and Chronology) that contains a subfield $q (Piece physical condition). When Enumeration and Chronology fields are present, piece physical condition may be recorded in subfield $q of the 863-865 field.

Subfield $q is not used for physical condition information resulting from a formal review for making preservation decisions. Preservation decisions are contained in field 583 (Action Note) . Example:
