ANSI Z39.44 and Z39.57 Data Elements in USMARC Format for Holdings Data
This appendix lists the data elements in the holdings statements specified in ANSI 39.44, Serial Holdings Statement, and in ANSI/NISO Z39.57, Non-Serial Holdings Statement, and indicates the corresponding USMARC holdings format content designation. The ANSI standards give the form for display of holdings statements, while USMARC is a carrier for the data elements that are used to construct the display.
Data elements that occur only in Z39.44 or Z39.57 are so indicated in brackets beside the data element. All other data elements occur in both Z39.44 and Z39.57.
When ANSI Z39.44, which includes both summary and detailed holdings statements, was completed, its precursor, ANSI Z39.42, Serial Holdings Statements at the Summary Level, was withdrawn by ANSI. The ANSI Z39.42, specifications was only slightly different from the summary holdings specifications in ANSI Z39.44. Because some institutions may have records conforming to Z39.42, the one Z39.42 data element that does not occur in Z39.44 has been listed under the ANSI/NISO column and marked obsolete. In instances where there is no one-to-one correlation between the ANSI/NISO data element and a USMARC content designator, a dash is used under the USMARC column.
