041 Language Code:
Subfield code used:
a Language code(s)
Only codes for languages that appear in the cataloging record in the body, notes, etc. are coded, except for less-than-full level cataloging.
The languages in the code are usually given in alphabetical order, but the primary language of the items always comes first.
Language codes are given in lower case letters. Codes are not separated by spaces or punctuation. Example:
Languages which are too numerous to list separately in a language note are represented by the code mul. The code mul is never used alone; it is transcribed following the code for the primary language of the item. Example:
All languages that appear in a cataloging record, whether in the body, notes, etc., or in the language note, are represented by a language code, regardless of the extent of the language on the item. Except that a secondary language that appears only as a simple parallel title need not receive a language code.
