The determination of whether an item is colored is based on the cartographic and bibliographic data that appears within the neat line or border, and not on material outside the border or on the verso of the item (e.g., secondary maps, ill., etc.).
If there is no border or neat line, all cartographic and bibliographic information on the entire sheet, related to the primary map, is used to make the determination. Secondary material (e.g., advertisements, insets, etc.) is not considered.
Monochromatic (i.e., having one color) items are not considered colored regardless of the color of the ink or the paper used.
For an item that contains a number of maps, sheets, etc., only some of which are colored, indicate the number that are colored, if it can be easily ascertained; otherwise, use the phrase some col. Examples:
