Series:

Initial Articles - Untraced:

As there is no mechanism for suppressing the initial article in series statement coding for an untraced series, the preceding policies create a discrepancy in the search strategies for the compressed search key for titles (i.e., ptk) needed to retrieve the bibliographic records and the SAR for an untraced series beginning with an initial article. Example:

It is not policy to record or emphasize the discrepancy by citing or reiterating the series statement form containing the initial article on the Series Authority Record as a note or a reference. Catalogers are expected to be knowledgeable regarding the differences and to incorporate this knowledge into their series search strategy by using the component word command (i.e., find) and/or variations on the ptk search based on knowledge of the preceding policies.

As a matter of perspective, prior to the implementation of the decision to trace all newly-established series, the decision to make a series untraced was a decision to de-emphasize access to and collocation of the series statement; since there is no series access to bibliographic records in an untraced series in a card file.
