Series Statement - Series Authority Heading vs. Series Statement:
It is absolutely essential that the distinction between the rules and practices for transcription of the series statement in the bibliographic record and the rules and practices for establishing the series in the SAR and associated form of series tracings be understood by all catalogers.
In essence the series statement is transcribed on the basis of what appears on the piece(7) while the series authority and the form of series tracing is determined by the cataloging rules and interpretations.(8)
It also should be noted that even for an untraced series established in name/title form for the series authority record, the series statement in the bibliographic record is transcribed as it is found on the piece. Cross references should be made to provide the necessary link between the form in the series statement and the form established in the authority record (e.g., title to name/title).
