Coasts:
The normal rules for indirect geographic subdivision should be used in subdividing headings for coasts based on the names of major water bodies (e.g., Atlantic Coast, Pacific Coast, etc.). The decision to divide a topical heading directly or indirectly is dependent upon how the specific coast heading is qualified. Example:
Coasts qualified with an area larger than a country (e.g., South American, Africa, etc.) or qualified by a country not used in indirect subdivision (i.e., the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union) are divided directly. Examples:
Coasts qualified by states of the United States, provinces of Canada, constituent parts of the United Kingdom, or republics of the Soviet Union, as well as by any other country are divided indirectly. Examples:
