520 ## $aToughlove is a nonprofit educational organization offering a program to help parents of adolescents and young people whose destructive behavior has gotten them in trouble at home, at school, in the community. A number of these children are substance abusers, so we offer parents information about drug and alcohol abuse and treatment. Toughlove groups are parent self-help groups giving and getting support in taking action to restore an atmosphere of cooperative living within the family. They do not act as professional counselors; instead they work with and refer members to other agencies in the community dealing with specific aspects of problem behavior. Information pamphlets on Down Syndrome including "This Baby Needs You More." First copy free, $1 for each additional copy. Free 10-day loan of videocassette "Gifts of Love." (25 min.). $50 to purchase. Science Scholar Program: $25,000 per year for 2 yrs. to outstanding young post-doctoral researchers in Down Syndrome. Available through university sponsorship application. 520 ##$aThe purpose of this department is to strengthen the family by advocating for the family amid the complex of public and private organizations that carry the responsibility for its well-being. This office provides telephone service to assist individuals and families in accessing family support services. These resources may be either public or private organizations. The types of services available may include marriage and family counseling, drug and alcohol counseling, housing assistance, child care and job-training.
Example of a program or service:
520 ##$aTen hour course for adults to enable them to be successful youth sports coaches. This course is the prerequisite for "Teaching Baseball Effectively" which is offered each March.
