A series is traced in the form in which it has been established in the authority file. In the descriptive part of a catalog record, the series is given in the series statement (field 440 or 490) to show the form in which it appears on the piece. If the two forms are the same field 440 is used alone because this field also provides a tracing. If the series statement and the series tracing differ, the series statement is given in field 490 (1st indicator "1") and the series tracing is given in an 8XX field, usually field 830 (see CEG, Series- -General information). The series tracing and series statement differ when the form of the series title or numbering differs, when the series is entered under a corporate body or uniform title, or when additional information, such as a statement of responsibility or a date, is given in the series statement. If the series is not to be traced it is given in field 490 (1st indicator "0")
