Description/Instructions

Field 555 contains a statement of volumes and/or dates covered by cumulative indexes for a serial and a statement of location of these indexes, whether issued as part of the serial or issued separately.  Input different types of indexes and different types of index notes (i.e., formal vs. informal) in separate 555 fields.

Do not confuse field 555 with field 510, which is used to record abstracting and indexing services.  A cumulative index is indicated in a 555 note when it is an integral part of the serial.  Field 510 is used when the indexing is external to the publication in hand.

First indicator - Display constant controller

The display constant Indexes: may be generated on output for both tabular and informal notes through a user's print program or online catalog display (first indicator "#").

$u  Uniform Resource Identifier.

Subfield $u contains the Uniform Resource Identifier which provides electronic access data in a standard syntax.  CONSER members have decided that use of this subfield in 5XX fields to duplicate information in the 856 field should be minimized because of maintenance concerns.  Both the 5XX field $u and the 856 $u would need to be updated if the URI changed.

$6  Linkage.

For instructions on the use of subfield $6, see field 880.
