Description/Instructions

Field 730 is used in serial records for authoritative added entries for works entered under title that have a relationship to the serial being cataloged.  An "authoritative" entry is one that is represented in the name authority file or by a bibliographic record.  Headings for non-authoritative title added entries not relating to the title given in field 245, such as titles of portions of a work, are tagged 740.  Field 730 is also used for names of radio and television programs, motion pictures and video recordings, and anonymous works.

The title proper or the uniform title heading, whichever is appropriate as the main entry, is used as the added entry for the related record.  For related publications such as supplements and online versions, the 730 may duplicate the linking entry field, and neither field should be omitted.

Titles for related serials given in field 730 must be represented by either an AACR2 CONSER record, an added entry on an AACR2 CONSER bibliographic record, or a name authority record.  If an AACR2 CONSER representation is not available, create a NAR or code the record as "msc" (for minimal level cataloging).  When authoritative, code "lc", "nlc" or "lcd" is used on the serial being cataloged, regardless of whether the authoritative form of the 730 is in the bibliographic database or in the name authority file.
