Fields in the record may be specifically linked using a generally-applicable field linking technique.  The technique relies upon the syntax of data in subfield $8 (Field link and sequence number) to identify the linked fields.  The structure and syntax for the field link and sequence number subfield are described in Appendix A in each of the five MARC formats.
