As the definitions and requirements for the MARC formats evolve and change, the content designators for some fields may become obsolete.  An obsolete content designator may have been used in MARC records in the past and may continue to appear in records created prior to the date it was made obsolete.  Obsolete content designators are not used in new records.

A reference to obsolete content designators for the MARC formats may be found with the descriptions of individual fields in the specific format (see notes in each field description under the heading "Content Designator History").
