Field 087 contains a single government document classification number, number stem, or a number span associated with a 1XX heading in an established heading record.  The classification number(s) may be qualified by explanatory information when the heading is represented in more than one place in the same classification scheme.  Each classification number or number span associated with a heading is contained in a separate field 087.

The government document classification number is an agency-assigned data element.  It is assigned by designated agencies in government classification programs.

The National level record requirement for this field is Optional.

Field 087 - Dewey Classification Number Assigned in Canada  [redefined, 1997]  [CAN/MARC only]:  Field 087 was redefined in CAN/MARC to contain government classification numbers.  Prior to redefinition, the first indicator values were:  # (No edition information recorded), 0 (Full edition), and 1 (Abridged edition).  The second indicator values were:  0 (Assigned by NLC) and 1 (Assigned by an agency other than NLC).  The subfield codes were:  $a (Dewey classification number - single number or beginning number of a range), $b (Dewey classification number - end number of a range), $c (Explanatory term), $2 (Source (i.e. edition number)), and $5 (Library to which class number applies).
