Character position definition and scope:

Up to four one-character alphabetic codes that indicate the relief type specified on the item.  Codes are usually derived from information in field 500 (General Note).  Codes are recorded in order of their importance to the described item, with the code for the most important relief aspect given first.  If fewer than four codes are assigned, the codes are left justified and each unused position contains a # (blank).  If more than four codes are appropriate, only the four most important are recorded.  Four fill characters ( |||| ) are used when no attempt has been made to code these character positions.

Record requirements for National-level and Minimal-level records:  Optional.

Content designator history:

Prior to the definition of code k (Bathymetry / isolines) and the redefinition of code e (Bathymetry / soundings) in 1980, both soundings and isolines were identified by code e (Bathymetry).

Code h (Color) was made obsolete in favor of the use of code c (Gradient and bathymetric tints) to record coloration.
