Character position definition and scope:

A one-character alphabetic code that describes the target audience for which the material is intended.  It is used primarily for educational audiovisual materials.  When items with factual content are considered appropriate for more than one target audience, the code is recorded for the highest level appropriate.  A fill character ( | ) is used when no attempt has been made to code this 008 position.

Content designator history:

Codes f (General) and g (Specialized) are obsolete.  Prior to 1972, the definitions of codes f and g were reversed:  f (General) and g (Specialized).

h - Secondary (grades 10-12)

k - Preschool and Kindergarten

m - Primary (grades 4-6)

p - Special education - general

q - Physically handicapped

r  - Mentally retarded

s - Simplified works for adults

t  - Gifted

c - Elementary and junior high  [renamed, 2002]

d - Secondary (senior high)  [renamed, 2002]
