Field definition and scope:

Field 030 contains the CODEN designation, a unique identifier for scientific and technical periodical titles; it consists of six characters.

The first four characters are mnemonic uppercase characters for serial titles to which a fifth character (e.g., A, B, C, D) is added.  The sixth character is a computer-calculated check character which may be either alphabetic or numeric.  All alphabetic characters are in uppercase.

Hyphens and spaces appearing in the CODEN abbreviation are not carried in the MARC record.

The National level record requirement for this field is Optional.

Field 030 is repeatable.
