Field definition and scope:

Field 082 contains a classification number assigned by the Library of Congress or by other agencies from editions of the Dewey Decimal Classification schedules.  The second indicator values distinguish between content assigned by the Library of Congress (LC) and content assigned by an organization other than LC.

The classification number is taken from the Dewey Decimal Classification, accessed through electronic or printed versions.  Through 1997, updates were issued in DC&:  Dewey Decimal Classification Additions, Notes and Decisions.  The brackets enclosing a DDC number that appear on printed products are not carried in the MARC record.  They may be generated based on the field tag.

The National level record requirement for this field is Optional.

Field 082 is repeatable.
