This field was made obsolete in 2008 to simplify the series area so that all title series statements would be entered in the 490 field and all title series added entries in the 830.

Field definition and scope:

Field 440 contains a series statement consisting of a series title alone.  It is used when the series statement and the controlled added entry form of the series title are the same.  Field 440 is both a series statement and a series added entry (title is traced).  When a 440 field is present, a corresponding 830 field is not used since it would duplicate the 440 field.

Since series statements do not include medium designators (subfield $h), when a series added entry requires a medium designator, field 490 is used for the series statement with a corresponding 8XX field for the series added entry.

The National level record requirement for this field is Mandatory if applicable.

Field 440 is repeatable.

MARC 21 conversion to current fields:

To construct field 490 (Series Statement), set 490 indicator 1 to 1; set 490 indicator 2 to blank; concatenate field 440 subfields $a, $n and $p and place the new string into 490 subfield $a; and copy the content of 440 subfields $v, $x, $6, and $8 into the same subfields in field 490.  Any additional subfields in field 440 do not convert to 490 but do convert to field 830.

To construct field 830 (Series Added Entry - Uniform Title), all 440 indicators and subfields convert to field 830 with the same indicator values and same subfields.

Content designator history:

Subfield $h - General material designation  [obsolete, 1997]  [CAN/MARC only]

Subfields  $n - Number of part/section of a work  [new, 1980]

$p - Name of part/section of a work  [new, 1980]

Subfields $n and $p were defined in 1980.  Prior to that time, numbered or named parts were not separately subfield coded.

Subfield $w - Bibliographic record control number  [new, 2007]

Subfield $0 - Authority record control number  [new, 2007]

For projected media (motion pictures, filmstrips, videorecordings, slides, and transparencies), this field can occur in records for items cataloged under rules in effect before the 1975 revision of Chapter 12 of AACR 1.  Prior to this revision, a media qualifier was not required in the series added entry when the name of the medium was an integral part of the series title, thus allowing the series added entry to be derived from the series statement.  Under the revised rules of AACR 1, all series added entries for projected media and special instructional materials must contain a media qualifier; therefore, field 440 does not occur in records for items cataloged under the revised version of the AACR 1 rules.

Under AACR 2, field 440 can occur in records if an institution chooses not to use media qualifiers in series added entries.
