Character position definition and scope:

Six numeric characters indicate the currency of the holdings information.  The date is recorded in the pattern yymmdd (yy for the year, mm for the month, and dd for the day).  A date that consists of only year and month information is left justified and each unused position contains a zero.  An unknown date is represented by six zeros.

The date on which the holdings report is first entered into machine-readable form is contained in field 008/00-05 (Date entered on file).  This date never changes.  In a separate holdings record, the date in field 005 (Date and Time of Latest Transaction) changes each time any transaction is made to the record.  Date of report indicates only changes to the holdings information.
