866 Textual Holdings - Basic Bibliographic Unit

Field definition and scope:

Field 866 contains a textual description of the holdings of a basic bibliographic unit in the collections of the reporting organization. It may be used instead of or in addition to field 863 (Enumeration and Chronology - Basic Bibliographic Unit) and any related field 853 (Captions and Pattern - Basic Bibliographic Unit) to record and/or display all or part of the holdings.

A general description of the four types of holdings data fields, their relationship to each other, and the repeatability of each is given in the 853-878 Holdings Data - General Information section. A general description of the three textual holdings fields is given in 866-868 Textual Holdings - General Information.

Field 866 is repeatable.

In 1987, subfield $x was defined for nonpublic notes and subfield $z (Note) was redefined to include only public notes. Prior to that change, both public and nonpublic notes were contained in subfield $z.
