Notes
Notes for a map series/set and serial (6) maps are of two types: those that describe the various sheets or accompanying materials of the map series/set, and, those that describe the contents of the map series/set or serial as a whole.
Since semantic difficulties may arise when composing notes to describe map series/sets or map serials, care must be taken to insure that confusion is not created by the formation of descriptive notes.
Categories of Notes:
When two or more of these categories of notes appear in a bibliographic description transcribe them as separate notes.
Attributes of Every Sheet or Issue
Attributes of Some Sheets or Issues
Attributes of the Map Series/Set of Serial (7) as a Whole
Variations in Title:
Statement of Responsibility:
Publication, Distribution, Etc.:
All variant publishers and/or authors of a map series/set or a serial (9) must be listed in a note. Generally, descriptive access should be provided for all variant producers. Example:
Edition and History:
The standard note, Includes various issues of some sheets, described a map series/set in which some sheets have been revised, either once or a number of times. The revision may be to individual sheets or the entire map series/set. All issues or editions are included in a single bibliographic description. Revised sheets are not treated as a separate map series/set. Example:
Physical Description:
Simple Contents:
Map series/sets and serial (10) maps can have two types of contents notes: those that describe the contents of the various sheets or accompanying materials of the set and, those that describe the contents of the map series/set or serial as a whole.
When two or more of the following types of simple content notes appear in a bibliographic description, transcribe them as separate notes.

Formatted Contents:
Formatted contents notes are used to list the titles of each item in a map series/set. Contents of a map series/set are listed only when they are sufficiently unusual to justify the note. When the contents of a map series/set are only those that might reasonably be expected, no formatted contents note is included. Example:
Bibliography:
The presence of a bibliography or bibliographies on an item is cited in a separate "bibliography" note (tag 504). This note always includes a standard terms or phrase.
The term bibliography is used when a map series/set includes the same bibliography on all or some sheets and separate bibliographies that pertain to only specific sheets.
The phrase bibliographical references is used when a map series/set includes bibliographies, each of which pertains to a separate portion of the set, rather than to the set as a whole.
