Background:

The LC classification schedules provide separate numbers for yearbooks under many major disciplines and topics. In early 1986, the distinction between yearbooks and other types of periodicals that had formerly been made in both subject headings and classification was discontinued (cf. H 2400).

Procedures:

1. Do not class any newly cataloged titles in existing class numbers for yearbooks. Use instead the corresponding number for periodicals.

Exception: When classifying a new serial title that is a continuation of a serial already classed in a yearbooks number, assign the same number to the new title that was assigned to the earlier title, providing THAT the numbering of the serial continues.

2. Do not submit proposals to cancel existing yearbooks numbers from the classification schedules. These numbers will be removed only when a schedule is undergoing a general revision.
